It’s hard to imagine a profession where you can make greater use of cloud services than web development. Web developers can build things that run in the cloud, using tools in the cloud. On top of that, freelance web developers can use cloud services to manage their businesses. Here’s how.

Building in the cloud

In the past, freelance web developers often had to play the role of system administrator, setting up and maintaining servers and databases and the like. These days, there are a number of services that provide these same needs with minimal set-up effort, allowing developers to focus more on what they’re building and less on infrastructure. That’s not to say that building on top of cloud services makes sense for every situation, but it’s a choice freelance developers and their clients can make based on trade-offs of time, cost and various technical factors. How long have you been with CX? 10 months.

What is your typical day like? I get to craft the iOS and Android apps. Day to day activities vary, but I spend a fair amount of time trying to understand the needs of our customers. Every week, I grab the next most important feature and start working on it. At CX, we try to release software early and often, so there is always a new challenge to tackle. The idea of a programmer sitting in a cube hacking out code 8 hours a day is almost completely opposite of what we do here at CX. Instead, we collaborate between teams to make sure all our products play well together. The culture is really what makes CX an outstanding place to work. (more…)
